Rhinoplasty for Dummies - What you must know before a nose job!

Rhinoplasty, commonly called as a nose job, is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedure. Even at Nana Hospital, we have new rhinoplasty patients visiting everyday.

Why do we get rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can give you a new, different nose. It can either give you a better function or a better aesthetic look, or both! Let's talk about functional problems of our noses.

1. Functional Reason for Rhinoplasty

One can have deviated septum, which is the main bridge to tip part of our nose.
You can also have crooked tip or crooked bridge or unbalanced nasal turbinate - which could cause breathing problems, sinus infections, runny nose and so on.

At Nana Hospital, we perform rhinoplasty to correct and balance out the problems for the functions to be improved. You can get your nose cartilages corrected, nose tip and nostrils re-sized for straight and balanced nose.

2. Aesthetic Reason for Rhinoplasty

There are more patients getting rhinoplasty for this reason. You can have:

- Deviation
- Hump (Bump)
- Crooked nose
- Long or pointy columella
- Bulbous Nose / Wide alar base (nostrils)
- Short (Upturned) nose - often called as a 'piggy nose'
- Big or too high nose (wide or high bridge)
- Low nose (Low bridge)

At Nana Hospital, our utmost importance is to explain what each patient can expect, what they can or cannot get (biological limitations), what is better, safe or not. We aim to understand and give exactly what the patient wants, as each person has different idea of beauty. Some love curved nose, some love straight nose.

Generally we aim to give our patients the noses that are natural, well-defined and slim that is proportional to their faces, with the tip with the right height and angle - so that the tip is not upturned nor droopy and the nostrils won't show much from the front.

What kind of procedures are there for Rhinoplasty?

Nose is composed of nose bone and septal cartilage inside. Only up to one third of the nose (from the top - in between eyes) is the nose bone and all of the other parts below (from the middle of the bridge to the tip) are made up of cartilages.

Here are the procedures for Rhinoplasty

1. Bridge Augmentation : This is to raise the height of your nose bridge. Silicone, Goretex, Rib cartilage or Dermis from the skin layer can be used as the implant.

At Nana, considering many pro's and con's we use High Soft Silicone which we decided is better than hard silicone (due to less infection, side effect than it) and goretex (less adhension, absorption). Of course, using your own rib cartilage and dermis is safer in terms of risk of side effect but they leave scar on our body from extracting and the cost is slightly higher.

2. Deviation Correction - along the bone and the cartilage area. It is good for aesthetic result and also, this can help breathing problem if the problem was due to blockage in the breathing path caused by cartilage deviation. (Important to know that deep, inwards problems with breathing won't be fixed with rhinoplasty.)

3. Cartilage reposition or removal - to straighten the bridge and the tip connecting area.

4. Tip surgery - To change projection angle, length of the tip of your nose. We can tie or reduce the wide, excess tip or add height with extra cartilage for slimmer and higher or smaller tip.

5. Alar base reduction - To reduce the size of your base/nostrils.

6. Osteotomy - To straighten, narrow down the widespread or crooked bone and define the top of your nose bridge.

7. Hump removal - To shave the bumps on your bridge - it makes the bridge straight. This procedure is necessary if you are putting on implant to add height to your bridge so that the implant does not shift (due to unbalanced ground) and cause infection.

    1. High nose bridge has higher / taller nose bone between the eyes and low nose bridge has low bone between the eyes so there is not much definition for the nose from the front view :) - Feel free to get personal online consultation with your pictures : https://wa.me/821074710128
