Winter Snacks To Warm-up This Winter

When temperature is dropping day by day, 
winter snacks are must have to warm up in the cold breeze.

Here are few that you’d see a lot around Seoul 
and are all-time favorite for Koreans; 
if you’re visiting Korea this winter, 
you’ve got to try these snacks!

호떡 (Hotteok)

Hotteok is deep-fried pancakes with brown sugar and cinnamon filling; 
some vendors fills with nuts inside for crunchiness. 
This sweet and savory snack draws people in with the smell 
and always a good way to forget about the cold.

붕어빵 (Bungeoppang)
Recently ‘영국남자’ (Korean Englishman) have introduced 
Bungeoppang to his friends and relatives; 
when asked what they think its inside, 
few answered that there’d be some kind of fish filling inside.

Many tourists many think that its fish filling because 
of the shape but what’s really inside is sweet-red bean paste; 
most black iron mold is shaped in ‘bungeo’ (carp) and 
that’s where the name comes from 😉

Now days, it comes in various sizes and filling other than red beans 
like custard, chocolate, pizza topping, etc. but 
sweet-red bean paste are most traditional.

호빵/찐빵 (Hoppang/Jjinbang)
Pre-cooked buns are typical Korean winter snacks; 
where you can see a big steam coming out of a store, 
that’s how they usually cook it. 
Again, red bean pastes are traditional filling 
but there’s meat; cheese; vegetables; etc. available.

떡볶이 (Tteokbokki)
Ttoekbokki is a popular dish in Korea which is 
cooked in red pepper paste (gochujang); 
it is easily found all across Korea and has many franchises 
with various flavors using curry, cheese, jajang (black soybean paste).

꼬치 어묵/오뎅 (Kkochi eomuk/odeng)
A classic winter snack that Koreans loves to eat is eomuk/odeng (fish cake); 
it’s prepared on skewers then boiled in 
radish, crab, kelp (may vary) broth for its flavor. 
It quickly warms up your body and can be found easily around Korea 
and especially at Pojang Macha (snack cart) which sells ttoekbokki 
and it’s the best combination together.

군고구마 (Baked Sweet Potatoes)
If you go around and find big oil tanks/barrels; don’t worry, 
it’s filled with sweet potatoes wrapped in tinfoil or 
newspaper being baked. Korean’s like this as food on the go 
to warm up and sometimes eat it as a meal due to its high nutrition.
