Nana Dermatology #2: HIFU laser treatments - Shurink vs. Ulthera!

Non-invasive lifting laser - how to select your type!

Here is a post to solve all your curiosity about HIFU and RF laser treatments, or "tighteing/lifting lasers', often used for non-invasive anti-aging purpose. There are many types such as Shurink, Thermage and Ulthera.

In our previous post we have explained what Shurink laser is and how it works (https://nanapsglobal.blogspot.com/2020/03/nana-dermatology-1-shurink.html) and here, we will talk about Ulthera and compare Ulthera with Shurink.

Nana Hospital's Dermatology department has both Shurink and Ulthera machines and both are very popular every day, as they offer tightening effect of the loose skin around the chin, jowls, cheeks and eyes - thus show lifting effect. But how can one decide which one is better for oneself? Also, why doesn't Nana offer Thermage procedure?

Thermage procedure is a RF laser treatment where it applies heat to top surface and the dermis area of the skin to cause the collagen layer to contract and encourage new collagen growth for smoother and firmer skin. It can therefore be good for fine line and wrinkles but since it applies heat to the outer surface as well as dermis and collagen layer, it can cause redness and swelling and also some side effects can occur if poorly performed, such as loss of volume (hollowness) or damaging on the outer surface of the skin. At Nana we offer many other skin boosters such as injection procedures that can help with fine lines, deeper wrinkles, skin volume, smooth texture, pores, tone and so on so we do not necessarily offer Thermage procedure.

Then is Shurink or Ulthera better than Thermage?
Shurink and Ulthera both work in a different way from Thermage. Ulthera uses high frequency ultrasound to creat heat in the deeper layer of the skin up to the SMAS layer. SMAS layer is situated below dermis and fat layer. It is micro-focused on the wanted area and cause cellular friction and precise, pin-point heating. The heat is only generated at the focal point, leaving the skin’s surface and intervening tissue unaffected. Tissue at the focal point is heated to ~65°C, causing immediate collagen contraction and denaturation, and initiating aggressive collagen synthesis. Over 90-180 days, the wound-healing response stimulates long-term tissue remodeling and leads to further lifting and tightening, with results that can last a year or more.

Shurink's effect is less powerful than Ulthera although it achieves the same goal - it lasts up to 6 months. However, to make it last, it is recommended to get at least 300 - 400 shots per procedures and get 2 procedures within 3 month's period to see the lasting effect. Shurink is however more affordable and weaker in strength therefore easily chosen by students and people of age below 30.

Ulthera however lasts up to a year and have more effective, precise result for wrinkles and lifting so is very popular for people of age above 30 and for people who do not wish to bother getting the procedures often.

Both do not damage the skin or cause any hollowness/hole damange on the skin layer. It can also help you look slim on the below ear area and many people get shurink or ulthera along with fat dissolving injections on those areas and skin botox on other facial area for tight upper surface skin.

Below are results of Ulthera / Shurink procedures!
Choose which is for you according to your age & preferred lasting period!
