Surgery Safety Precautions!

Surgery safety precautions and important factors as a preparation step

Normally, before surgery

You'll be noted of something like that.

Q.. Why do you have to fast before surgery?

When you're put under general or IV sedation sleep anesthesia,
the food left in your stomach can cause gastroesophageal reflux and
that can lead to a blockage in the respiratory tract.
If the vomit flows into the respiratory tract,
that can cause aspiration pneumonia.

Some of our patients tend to think that fasting only means solid food
but you can't have coffee, water, gum, candy, etc.
However, if you're on prescribed medication, you can take that
with a small amount of water after consulting with the doctor.

Q. Why do we have to remove our nail polish(or gel) before surgery?

When we ask "Please remove all nail arts before surgery",
there are many people coming without doing so.
Saying "how many should I remove?"
"Can I just remove one?" or "This is not gel though".

This machine here is Oximeter(Fingertip Pulse Oximeter).
Using the sensors here measures the oxygen saturation
in the peripheral blood vessels.
However, if you have other substances on your nail,
the sensor cannot work through it as it is supposed to.

Then the oxygen saturation level won't be measured correctly and
the surgery cannot be done without the correct measurement!
if you come with only one finger removed,
what if something happens and we need to use a different finger?
So you have to remove at least 4 to be safe(same goes with feet).

Q. Why can't we wear metal or accessories during surgery?

As a method to stop bleeding(hematosis),
in case of bleeding that needs to be stopped, we use electrocautery.
It works by sending a current with high-continuous energy through
the tip of the electrocautery to achieve hemostasis.

If you have any metal products on your body,
that current can get in touch with, there is a risk of burning so it is banned.
Metals are not allowed but silicone products are OK

Q. Why shouldn't I drink water right after I wake up from the operation?

That is because of the anesthesia!
When you go under anesthesia, your entire muscles are relaxed
so if you drink or eat immediately after you wake up,
the stomach cannot exercise properly and cause vomiting.
And in the worst case, it can also cause aspiration pneumonia which is fatal.
So you have to keep the fasting time that the medical staff guides you.
