Anesthesia 101: What is the best for your surgery?

NANA here again! Today we'll be looking more into the different anesthesia types and what would be best for your surgery! There are 3 different types of anesthesia that we provide here at NANA Plastic Surgery: General, Sleep, and Local Anesthesia. It is important to note which anesthesia is best used in which situation, as not every type of anesthesia is compatible with every surgery. Shall we look at them together?

General Anesthesia

This anesthesia targets your central nervous system, while on this anesthetics, your nervous system will be temporarily suppressed and you will lose consciousness. This anesthesia is usually inhaled through a breathing mask, or given through intravenous (IV) tube. You will have to breathe through a breathing apparatus while on this anesthetic. This anesthesia is usually used for facial contouring, breast augmentation, and so on.

Sleep Anesthesia

As the name suggests, this anesthesia will put you into a sleep-like state. You will be able to breathe on your own without the help of machines, allowing you to breeze through the surgery. The anesthesia used is very similar to general anesthesia, just of a lighter variety. You will still consciousness, however, you won't feel the pain. This anesthesia is generally used for eye and nose surgery.

Local Anesthesia

Local anesthesia targets the area where the surgery is being done. This means that the anesthesia is given to the particular part of your nervous system that gives feeling to the area of surgery. Usually, this surgery is done for the eyes on top of sleep anesthesia.

How do you wake up from anesthesia? 

The process of emergence, whereby the drug is reduced in quantity will be done. As less and less of the drug enters your body, you will slowly start to wake up and regain consciousness. Once awakened, you will be brought to the recovery room, where nurses will monitor your condition before deeming if you are able to leave on your own or to stay further in the hospital.
